Exploring, Expanding our Lives
DISCUSSION -- Discover the Great Lakes: A Musical Journey
Lee Murdock, our discussion leader this year, has uncovered a boundless body of music and stories relevant to the Great Lakes area. He shared folklore and songs made of hard work, hard living, ships coming to port and ships lost to the lake. The music of the Great Lakes is grounded in the work song tradition, from the rugged days of lumberjacks and wooden sailing schooners. Lee came alongside us with ballads of contemporary commerce and revelry in the grand folk style. We all enjoyed the journey!
SINGING and MUSIC
June Fettig our gifted choral leader, led us in song each morning after breakfast, and was assisted by Marissa Dodge. There was fun and laughter, as well as inspiration and appreciation of the music from many countries and genres. We reaped the benefits of having a number of talented musicians who shared cello, harp, fiddle, guitar, banjo, flute, and more. A live dance band accompanied the dancers!
DANCING
Dave Leussler led Folk Dancing this year. Dave has been dancing most of his life (his father, Donn, led folk dancing at Northland for many years!). Dave has taught dance at Tapestry Folk Dance Center in Minneapolis, at social events at his church, and at the Danebod folk school Family camp in Minneapolis. All this experience means Dave was perfectly poised to teach rec labbers to folk dance, and teach interested labbers how to effectively lead folk dancing. I
